Getting to Understanding (An IMAGO-ish Conversation)

We all get to stuck places in our relationships where we aren’t feeling understood. This exercise helps move us closer to understanding.

1.     Partner 1 sets a timer for 7 minutes and shares about either a planned topic or whatever is on their mind.

2.     While Partner 1 is talking, Partner 2 takes notes.

3.     When the timer goes off, Partner 2 summarizes in their own words what Partner 1 was trying to communicate, using their notes to help increase their accuracy. They then ask their partner if they are getting it right.

4.     Partner 1 either says that they got it right or corrects information. Partner 2 then summarizes the additional information

This exercise is an extremely simplified version of The IMAGO Dialogue. I prefer the simple structure, because taking away ‘scripts’ can help the conversation feel more authentic to both parties.
